Unity Launches Vernon Connor As Constituency #6 Candidate by R. Wilson
Team Unity has finally announced the final candidate to complete the “Unity dream team” in Vernon Alexis Connor for constituency #6. Connor will run as a PAM candidate against the undefeated SKN Labour candidate Prime Minister Hon. Denzil Douglas in the election that is due in less than 90 days. At a Team Unity meeting in Dieppe Bay Thursday night (Jan 22) PAM Leader Hon. Shawn Richards introduced the new candidate to a large crowd. Richards described him as son of Dieppe Bay who was raised to be a gentleman. He taught numerous science subjects at the CFBC, and is fluent in French and Spanish. “He has a vested interest in the continued interest of the people of Constituency #6 and the advancement of the youth population,” Richards said. “He has decided to become involved because he wants to make a better life for the people in Number 6.” Connor addressed the audience for the first time as a candidate, having spoken on the Unity platform at a public meeting in Molyneux on Sunday. He said over a year ago he had been endorsed as a candidate for Team Unity, however he had to stop campaigning with them after his employers called him into a meeting and asked him to resign or he would be fired. Connor said he was told he was a teacher working for government and they had received sworn testimony that he was campaigning on behalf of a particular party. They said they were given instructions “from above” to call him in to warn him that the Civil Servant Act prohibits civil servants from taking part in active politics. Connor said meanwhile other civil servants were on the public platform “giving big speeches, representing political parties”. “So I said let me lay low for a moment, and that’s what I did. If you saw me campaigning and canvassing a year and a half ago and after a while you saw me no more, it was because I was just being careful, it wasn’t that I didn’t care,” he said. “Thank God I have come here tonight and I stand before you first as a lover of God, the God whom I serve and honor and I respect and whose principles I live by, and secondly I come to you as a lover of my country. I stand here willing to stand up and put my country first, country above self.” The former teacher who is pursuing a medical degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology, said he is a proud, young, friendly, vibrant, energetic, and fresh candidate for Team Unity. “I am seeking to be the next representative for constituency number 6 after the next general elections and I am very happy and accept this responsibility with humility and I pledge to you that I will never let you down.” Connor will no doubt have an almost insurmountable task to unseat the incumbent and popular Douglas in what is considered a traditionally ‘safe seat” for the Labour party.
