Celebrating Its 25th Anniversary of the Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship Programme

The TDC Group of Companies continues to demonstrate its commitment to educational and personal development through its 25 years of the Warren Tyson Memorial Scholarship Programme.  The TDC Warren Tyson Scholarship Programme, which was named after the first Chairman, Warren Cecil Tyson, was started in 1981.  Mr. Tyson was first employed with J. W. Thurston & Co. Ltd., as a Clerk in 1928.  He was subsequently promoted to an Executive Director with the Firm in 1958, which he held until the Company went into liquidation in 1973.

Mr. Tyson was one of the founding members of the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Trading and Development Company Limited (TDC), a Public Company, which acquired the trading interests of J. W. Thurston & Company Ltd., and H. F. Wildy and Company Ltd. Subsequently, he was appointed the first Chairman and Executive Director.  Mr. Tyson was also an advocate for Education throughout the entire Nation, and to mark his commitment to academic enhancement, TDC funds a scholarship programme in his name.

The programme is designed to assist and support students entering Public Secondary Schools across St. Kitts-Nevis.  These young scholars are eligible to receive financial assistance throughout their Secondary and Tertiary School tenures. Students are also afforded the opportunity to work during their vacations, as well as, on Saturdays, which helps them to develop socially and professionally.

Each year, five (5) students from St. Kitts and two (2) from Nevis are recruited. Since its inception, approximately 161 students have gone through the programme.  Today, many of these students are at University pursuing further studies or are full time employees with the Company.  Many also hold Managerial positions in various departments at TDC.

Each year, the Company injects approximately $100,000 into the Programme, which amounts to an investment of about 2.5 million dollars, since its beginning in 1981.  This year, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Programme.  Accordingly, the Company is currently planning several activities to mark this momentous milestone.
