(Basseterre, St. Kitts) –
Austin Williams will be recommended to serve as the next Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas told the police high command and the rank and file of his decision on Wednesday. Mr. Williams is expected to assume the post in early February when the current commissioner, Robert Jeffers, begins his pre-retirement leave.
The PM will make the recommendation to the Police Service Commission, which is expected to give final approval.
“It’s exciting,” Mr. Williams said. “I feel satisfied and I’m comfortable with the position.”
Some challenges lie ahead for the new commissioner, but he’s prepared to meet them.
“The challenge is the resources,” he said. “We have been working on that. I believe we are making headway with the start of a new police station and the refurbishment of others.”
Mr. Williams is a 21-year veteran of law enforcement. He has filled numerous posts, including assistant commissioner, head of the Special Services Unit, head of Special Branch and on patrol.
In addition to the appointment of Mr. Williams, the new Deputy Commissioner of Police will be Mr. Stafford Liburd and the two assistant commissioners, Mr. Joseph Liburd and Mr. Joseph Richardson.
