Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 8, 2026)The St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) has marked its 25th anniversary with the unveiling of a new mural highlighting the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of young people in advancing sustainable development.

Located on Upper Market Street in central Basseterre, the mural, titled “A World We Make,”. was officially unveiled on August 29 as part of activities commemorating SKNYPA’s 25th anniversary.

The artwork features the Earth held in human hands and surrounded by the 17 SDGs, with the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis positioned at the centre of the globe. The design connects the internationally recognised development goals with the Federation’s own aspirations and national identity.

Minister of State responsible for Youth Empowerment, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, commended SKNYPA for undertaking the community initiative, noting its contribution to the physical environment while highlighting issues connected to sustainability and national development.

“I must congratulate and commend the SKNYPA for taking the initiative to paint this mural in the heart of Central Basseterre,” said Minister of State Phillip. “I was especially impressed to see how the piece highlights the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a way to remind us of the collective efforts needed to achieve our Sustainable Island State Agenda.”

The project brought together youth participation, visual art and community involvement, with local residents, creatives and members of the private sector contributing to its completion.

According to Minister Phillip, the initiative demonstrates the potential for collaboration among young people and other members of the community to create projects that contribute to the improvement of public spaces.

“The fact that our young people engaged a local artist and residents to paint the mural is a positive demonstration of community care and cooperation,” she said. “The final outcome is eye-catching and uplifting to the environs. Well done to SKNYPA for executing and to all who sponsored, supported and painted to bring the mural to completion.”

SKNYPA member Aquanje Robinson led the mural project, while local artist Sasha Herbert of Sasha the Artist Studios served as Lead Artist and Facilitator. Community members and other supporters also participated in the painting and development of the artwork.

The mural forms part of SKNYPA’s wider 25th anniversary activities and comes as the government continues to emphasise youth participation, community development and the advancement of its Sustainable Island State Agenda.

Through the initiative, SKNYPA has also provided a visible representation of the SDGs in the capital while creating an opportunity for young people and community members to participate directly in a public art project focused on national development.
