(Basseterre, St. Kitts)”A group of young people from the drama class at the Basseterre High School – who are cognizant of the crime situation in the country and who want to dramatize the pain felt by families of crime victims – will present a play entitled “The Cry” on Dec. 19 at the Basseterre High School at 7:30 pm. The play is being put on by The Youth Exploring Talent Theatre in collaboration with Ambassadors for Peace and Empowerment and is a Moses Byron Production. In the play, mournful mothers reveal their heartbreaking stories about their children who are caught up in ant-social behavior or who have been murdered. The play will portray the importance of parental guidance and will feature the pain of mothers who have lost a child to gang violence. Mr. Moses Byron, drama teacher at Basseterre High School, said that the production will feature mothers because most Caribbean families are matri-focal, but it doesn’t ignore the fact that fathers are called to play an equally important role in the raising of their children.” This is what some of the actresses who will be in the play had to say: “I feel good to know that I have the ability to perform in such a touching event and it would help me to prepare for my future career of becoming a professional actress. I would like to make an appeal to all the parents to train their children in the right way,” Rae-Dawn Thomas said. “I hope that persons from various sectors of government would come out and witness this event because it is felt that there is not sufficient support from these persons to combat the high crime rate,” Tasanna Wattley said. “I feel motivated to have an impact on the general public and I hope that they would get a positive message and that the gangs would put their guns down and finish away with the violence,” Shanice Herbert said. “I am pleased to be one of the characters in this production and I hope that this event would bring a positive result to the youths and parents,” Shakema Hazel said. “I am disturbed with the gang violence in the Federation and I hope that my story would change the minds of our youths,” Cleopatra Woodley said. Tickets for the show can be purchased at Super Drug Store.
