Prime Minister Andrew Holness has emphasized the Jamaican government’s dedication to improving the lives of Jamaicans through important programs, despite challenges such as global inflation, hurricanes, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Heal the Family, Heal the Nation gathering in Kingston on January 8,  Holness stated that while the government is not responsible for rising costs, it is committed to managing the economy to ease burdens on households.

He mentioned efforts to address high electricity and water bills, encouraging citizens to take advantage of amnesty programs to lower costs.

The Prime Minister announced a $1 billion investment to boost agricultural production, aiming to reduce food prices. He also highlighted inflation’s decline to 3.9% from a peak of 12% and measures like expanding public transport to lower living expenses.

Unemployment has hit a record low of 3.6%, but Holness acknowledged the need to reduce youth unemployment . He also noted the introduction of a social pension program for citizens aged 75 and older.

In 2024, serious crimes decreased, including a 19% reduction in murders, saving 250 lives. Dr. Holness credited prayers for this improvement and urged Jamaicans to remain hopeful, count their blessings, and adopt a positive outlook despite tough times.

The Prime Minister also praised the National Day of Prayer for fostering unity and faith across the country.

Opposition Leader Mark Golding called for national unity, encouraging Jamaicans to embrace righteousness and place God at the center of their actions to overcome challenges.
