Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been re-elected as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

Her party, the United National Congress (UNC), won big in the 2025 general election. With help from the Coalition of Interests, the UNC secured 26 out of 41 seats in the House of Representatives. This result ended the People’s National Movement’s (PNM) ten years in power.

The election happened after former Prime Minister Keith Rowley resigned unexpectedly. Stuart Young was appointed in his place, but many people were upset that no public vote took place. Young then dissolved Parliament, leading to a snap election.

Persad-Bissessar, who was the first female prime minister from 2010 to 2015, campaigned on fighting crime and fixing the economy. She promised higher public sector wages, protection for pensions, and a plan to restart Petrotrin, the state oil company shut down in 2018 due to corruption.

However, one of her first jobs will be to strike a trade deal with Donald Trump’s USA.

The election also changed politics in Tobago. The Tobago People’s Party (TPP) won two seats. Now, three different parties are represented in Parliament, showing people’s desire for change and better representation.

Persad-Bissessar’s return is seen as a big win for the UNC. Her government says it plans to rebuild trust, improve social services, and deal with the country’s economic and security problems.

The election took place peacefully in the twin islands, which was a relief consideration that they were under a state of emergency for 105 days  since the year began due to criminal gang activity.
